If you must, believe.

I don’t know much about the world and how it works, but I’m a firm believer in the power of thoughts, words and belief systems. I believe that what we think about and believe in greatly affects our actions as well as speech and invariably, the reaction we receive. I’ll explain.

So today, I got talking with my new roommate and a friend of hers about setting goals and its relationship with actual achievements. My roommate was of the opinion that life was unpredictable and as such, one should go with the flow; while I said it didn’t hurt to set goals and possible plans on how to achieve those goals and while we debated on that, we ended up venturing into a topic that I find particularly sensitive.

My roommate said something that struck a nerve, she said, “Well, plans or not, no man would want a woman who surpasses him “. I blinked passed the irrelevance of that statement to our conversation and asked her to explain herself. She went on to talk about the male ego and how a woman ought to water down the extent of her intelligence and achievements in order to show the man his importance. I then asked her if the man should also water down his achievements for the woman’s sake and she said “that won’t be necessary ”

To say that I was shocked would be an understatement. I told her that a man who needed that to happen to feel relevant needs to work on himself, and I would want a man who believed in me and my capabilities; someone who is not insecure and afraid of how far my wings can fly, and I would happily do the same. She mumbled a, “then you’d be alone”. In order to avoid any harsh words or bad blood, I let it slide but it really had me thinking.

A lot of people in the world complain about not being appreciated, or respected, but do they actually believe that they deserve that appreciation, or respect? I believe you only go through what you allow (yes, I got that from a Cardi B song πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚), but seriously though, I don’t think ANYONE, whether male or female, old or young has to make themselves seem any less than they are in order to make another person feel better about themselves. I’m not saying we should go about beating our chests and blowing up trumpets, but I believe that every human ought to have their heads held up, my father told me that.

The way you see yourself, speak about yourself and treat yourself is just showing others how you want to be treated. If you must believe in something, at least believe in yourself too.
